Dobry Backuper allows you to easily back up and restore saved data without any special skills. At the same time, the program features a number of robust possibilities, which make it on a par with professional backup software. For example, the scheduled backup possibility allows to minimizing the user's actions and provides regular and up-to-date backups.
This Help will accelerate your getting started, regardless of the level of your computer skills. That said, we still recommend that you have a look at the «System Requirements» and «Useful links» sections. If you are an old pro, you might start working without reading this documentation any further. If you are an intermediate computer user, you may skip this section and jump straight to «Quick Start», which will give you the basic information on how the program functions, and will help start working. Then you can refer to the «Using Dobry Backuper» section and, in more detail, consider all the possibilities of this really simple and powerful tool. And if you are completely new to computers or to backing up in particular, then please go on reading this Help to learn more of backup principles and of the program Dobry Backuper as well.
A modern personal computer is one of the most amazing assistants for people. As a result of your daily work with a computer, a lot of data is created. Normally, most of the data is stored as files on your computer's hard drive. However, unfortunately any computer, even the most perfect one, breaks at times. And its weakest point is the hard drive, the place where your data is stored. As a rule, the data is the most valuable for you. Anyway, your computer can be repaired, and the hard drive changed, but files once lost cannot be retrieved, unless you have made any reserve copies to some other media. Archives with reserve copies are called backups. Backup allows restoring the data lost due some reasons, but saved before in it. Regular and "fresh" backups give you the only right clue for protecting yourself against data loss, which sometimes has been collected for years of hard work. Certainly, backups can be made by simple copy-paste method or by creating archives on various data media or on specialized network servers. However, this is rather a tiring way. Besides backups should be made regularly which causes certain difficulties for users due to some irregularity of human nature. At this point, different specialized programs come to aid, those, which allow to considerably simplify and automate the task.
Dobry Backuper is a native OS X application that allows creating and saving backups in a safe place in just three (3) mouse clicks. This is so simple that even the most inexperienced user can handle it. However, despite its simplicity the program offers the full spectrum of possibilities on creating efficient and regular backups.
Dobry Backuper lets create, so-called, full and versioned backups as well as incremental ones. It also provides possibilities for compressing the obtained backups, creating multi-volume backups with a limited archive size, restricting backup contents by powerful filters, including the exclusion filter based on regular expressions. One of the key features is automation of the backup process with a flexible schedule, which provides regularity and "freshness" of backups. It also guarantees a powerful protection from losing valuable data. Dobry Backuper allows saving your backups in a safe place: on CDs and DVD discs, on any mounted devices, including network ones, on additional hard drives etc. And of course you can save your backups simply in a separate folder on your hard drive for future transmitting via the network, or save it on any other media with some other files. The format of archives used for saving backups is fully tar compatible. This allows for exchanging archives via the Internet with no limits and extracting files from such archives on any computer, using tar utility* without Dobry Backuper.
* tar - command-line tool creates and manipulates archives which are actually collections of many other files; the program provides users with an organized and systematic method for controlling a large amount of data.

At the end of 2004, when the first version of the product was being developed, the Ukrainian people demonstrated to the whole world its faithful striving for democracy and common human values. As a symbol of concordance with the peaceful struggle of the Ukrainians for their rights, a good Ukrainian word dobry has become a part of the new company's name DobrySoft and its first product's name Dobry Backuper!

* The extra hard disk space equals to the size of one CD or DVD, plus about 30 - 300 MB for resource forks and auxiliary files. Basically, it should be accessible on the device where the '/tmp' folder is located.
