Program Features
- Create full, versioned and incremental backups
You can create backups using one of the three methods:
Full - all selected files are saved, and the resulting archive replaces the previously created one.
Versioned - all selected files are saved in a new backup archive, and the previous archives remain intact.
Incremental - each time a backup is built, only the files that were changed are saved in the new backup archive.
- Flexible schedule allows to automate the backup process
The flexible, customizable scheduling tool allows to fully automate the backup process, so that backups are built on a regular basis (daily, weekly or monthly). You can specify the backup start time to a minute. You can create a separate schedule for each backup, based on its specifics.
- Back up to any mounted device/drive, including FireWire, USB, ATA, SCSI, CD and DVD devices, or network volumes
The program allows to save backups to any locally mounted device or volume, for which the current user has the read/write access.
- Tar-compatible backup archives
Dobry Backuper uses a tar-compatible (*.tar, *.tgz) format for its backup archives. This means that you can extract files from your backup archives on any computer, even without Dobry Backuper installed. Also, it allows to send backup archives by e-mail or via the Internet trouble-free.
- Support for multi-volume backups.
Lets you limit the maximum size of a backup archive, so that large backups are split into several archive files. This feature is handy when your entire backup archive doesn't fit on a single CD or DVD, and you need to burn it onto several disks.
- Segment large files using multi-volume backups.
By using multi-volume backups you can back up files of whatever large size, such files get segmented into backup archives of a voluntary size. This may come in handy if you need to transfer your backup to another user, for instance, by several e-mails, which normally have a limit on the attachment size.
You can reduce the size of resulting backup archives by 10-60% by enabling the backup compression feature.
- Powerful exclusive filters, including regex-based filename patterns
You can optimize the backup size by using the powerful built-in exclusive filters. One of them allows to use regular expressions to exclude unwanted files from the resulting backup archive. For instance, the exclusive filter '*.o | ~.nib' allows to exclude from the archive all files, which have the '.o' extension, and the filenames ending with '~.nib'.
- The ability to back up hidden files
Dobry Backuper recognizes all types of hidden files in the folders, added to a backup. You may specify whether to save or not to saves such files in the resulting archive.
- Restore files back to their original place, or to a location of your choice
The restore process is really simple, and allows to restore the files back to their original locations, or to any location, specified by the user.
- Restore files with their original permissions
All files preserve their original permissions after they have been restored, keeping your file system identical to its pre-backup state.
- Preservation of resource forks
Before Mac OS X and Carbon, files (especial applications) had two forks, known as the data fork and the resource fork. Apple has changed that policy and now recommends using single fork files. Nevertheless, there are a lot of old style application files with resource forks. Dobry Backuper stores resource forks in separate archive and correctly restores them back.
- Preservation of HFS file types and creators
Files residing on HFS and HFS+ file systems have their Finder attributes stored in a private fork separate from both resource and data forks. These attributes include type and creator codes. Dobry Backuper preserves and correctly restores HFS file types and creators.
- Efficient backup management
The backup management system provides easy control over backups, allowing to add new files or remove the ones you no longer need. It's also possible to manage versions of backup archives, choosing the archive to restore your files from. All the backups, created on one computer, can be easily transferred to another one.
- Brief and detailed logging of all program actions
The program keeps track of all its actions, so the user can control the processes and always have a clear idea of what's going on. You can control the level of detail of the information, stored in the log file.
